Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick appeared at a pre-trial hearing on charges ranging from perjury to obstruction of justice yesterday. The mayor and his defense lawyers will tried to counter Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy’s challenge to have 36th District Court judges excluded from hearing his criminal case because of possible prejudices they may have toward the mayor or colleagues who’ve worked for the city. Kilpatrick and his ex-chief of staff Christine Beatty both face numerous felonies after they allegedly lied under oath in a civil trial last year, denying they had an extra-marital affair and saying they didn’t fire two cops whose investigation might’ve exposed the relationship. The cops sued, winning over $8 million.
